Stage 1: Explore

A newbie to the DDS pond

A starting point for foreign-trained dentists considering a US DDS. What the degrees and programs are called, and the six things to think through before you apply.

Key takeaways

  • DDS and DMD are the same US dental doctorate; abroad, the equivalent is usually a BDS.
  • US specialties are called residencies, and some come with an MS degree.
  • Programs for foreign-trained dentists go by many names (IDP, International Dental Pathway, Advanced Standing), but they lead to the same DDS/DMD.
  • Plan your profile, school list, exams, statement of purpose, letters and finances before you start applying.

Hey there! I am Apurva Dabak, your DDS mentor if “D.D.S.” are the words that tickle you and are all you dream about. In this blog, I am going to share all the initial information about DDS. If you are someone who wants to explore this option after you have been trained in your own country, this blog is for you.

What is DDS?

Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) is a doctorate program of the dental profession. Around the world, these are equivalent to a BDS, DDS (like in South Korea), etc. Specializations in dentistry are called “residencies” in the United States. These residencies may or may not be associated with an MS degree, for example a Master of Science in Prosthodontics or Orthodontics. It varies from university to university.

What is the IDP or Advanced Standing Program?

A program specifically designed for foreign dental graduates who wish to obtain dental licensure in the United States is called an IDP (International Dental Program or International Dental Pathway), an Advanced Standing Program for Foreign-Trained Dentists, and so on. Each university has come up with its own title for the program.

First steps

Here are some of the initial steps you will need to think through before you start applying to DDS programs:

  • Profile-building strategy
  • Which schools to apply to
  • Entrance exams like TOEFL, ADAT, GRE, etc.
  • Statement of purpose
  • Evaluation letters
  • Financial security

The entire DDS process is lengthy and strenuous. It tests your patience, perseverance and hard work. Discipline, time management, focus and passion will help you get through any hurdles that come along the way to achieving your DDS!
